Vasiliy Lazarev. He joined the Communist Party in 1964. A determined and talented student, he graduated from the college with honors in 1965 and then served as a flight engineer lieutenant with fighter squadrons in the Czechoslovakian Air Force. In 1969, he achieved the rank of lieutenant commander and two years later qualified as a pilot 1st class. He was then promoted to the rank of captain. In 1972 he was chosen to study at the Gagarin Air Force Academy, along with Vladimir Remek. Three years later he was awarded the medal “For Service to Country” and in 1976 he defended his thesis and graduated.

According to the flight plan, one day was set aside for leisure; a day when the cosmonauts summed up the results of their experiments, exercised, and prepared research reports. The resident crew also wrote personal letters for dispatch to Earth with the returning crew.
